Teaching Kids to Sew - Project #5 Needle Case
For this Needle Case you will need the following:
4 - 5" charm squares
batting measuring 9 1/2" x 5"
2 felt rectangles measuring 8" x 4"
Embroidery Floss or Pearl Cotton
Fabric Scraps to make quilt design for applique (a heart, star, etc)
Optional buttons
Applique design to front - optional button hole stitch around the design using embroidery floss or pearl cotton.
Sew the outside squares, right sides together with a 1/4" seam. Press the seam open.
Sew the inside squares right sides together with a 1/4" seam. Iron the seam open.
With a pencil, mark the center of one felt rectangle. Center the felt rectangles onto the right side of the inside pieces and pin in place.
Zigzag across the marked center of the felt rectangles, attaching the felt to inside pieces. Turn the entire piece and zigzag once again for added strength.
With a pencil, mark a 3" opening in the bottom center of the outside pieces. Place the inside face up on top of the batting with the outside on the top face down. Pin or clip all layers together.
Beginning at the bottom marking, sew around all sides with a 1/4" seam to the top marking leaving the 3" open for turning.
Trim the corners.
Turn right side out. Hand sew the opening closed being careful to tuck in the batting and fabric edges 1/4".
Quilt through the layers around the applique and top stitch around the outside edge with embroidery floss or pearl cotton.
Optional: quilt through the layers on the back with a design to match the front.
First time sewers will need step by step guidance to complete this project. It can be a very satisfying project to use as the beginning sewer continues on their learning path.
Happy Sewing!
