Teaching Kids to Sew - Project #7 Zippered Bag
Materials needed for pictured bag:
9" zipper
handle fabric - 2 1/2" x 8"
2 of main fabric
2 of lining fanric
2 pieces of batting all measuring 8" x 10"
Lay lining fabric right side up. Place back side of zipper across top. Place main fabric right side down. Place batting on top. Sew across the top through all 4 layers.
Turn all fabrics right side out and top stitch all layers next to zipper.
Repeat the above on other side of zipper.
Quilt layers as desired.
Zigzag edges as desired (or serge). With right sides together, sew the bottom with a 3/8" seam. Serge or zigzag edge.
Iron the handle down 1/4" on both sides and then in half. Sew or zigzag down both sides of the handle.
*With right sides facing, match the bottom of the zipper to the bottom seam. Sew across using a 3/8" seam. Backtrack over the area where the zipper is for extra strength. Serge or zigzag the edge.
Repeat from * with the other end. Fold the handle in half lengthwise and pin in place over the match up of the bottom seam and zipper.
Fold a corner and draw a line across according to how tall you want the bag to be (in this case, 3"). Sew across the line.
2 options for finishing:
Fold corner in to the center of the end and tack in place, OR trim off the corner and serge or zigzag edge.
Turn bag right side out.
Bags can be made in other sizes. Patterns have to be adjusted only slightly to accommodate a different sized zipper. Just cut fabric 1" more than the zipper and add more to the width according to the finished size that you desire the bag to be.
This is a fun project that can get a lot of use. Enjoy!
