Teaching Kids to Sew - Project #6 Quilted Bag

Materials needed:

quilted fabric - 23" x 32"
embroidered square 
2 1/2" binding
2 1/2" strips for pocket
inner pocket 
3 yards cotton belting


Sew 2 1/2" strips around embroidered piece with a 1/4" seam.

Sew the top of the front pocket to inner pocket. Iron the seam flat. Top stitch across the top edge.

Trim the sides of the pocket.

Measure 3 1/2" from the center of the quilted fabric and position the bottom edge of the pocket.

Sew the bottom edge of the pocket to main fabric with a 1/4" seam. Turn to the right side and pin in place.

Zigzag the ends of the cotton belting.

Place the end of the belting in the center of the main fabric (6 1/2" from the edge). Pin in place. Leave appoximately 20" for the handle and pin across the other side of the pocket doing the same at the second handle.

Sew both sides of the belting to the main fabric stopping 1" from the top edge. 

Zigzag the ends of the belting to secure the ends in place.

With right sides together, sew the side seams with a 1/2" seam.

Trim one side of seam to 1/4" and zigzag the other side.

Fold over the seam and topstitch side seam with a zigzag stitch. Turn the piece around and zigzag up the other side.

Centering the side seam, draw a line across to create the width of the bag (in this case, 6"). Sew across that line on both sides. 

Tack the corners to the sides of the bag.

Sew binding across the top edge with a 1/4" seam.  

Flip it over and either handstitch in place or sew by machine.

This project was super easy and quick to make within just a few hours. It was made completely from donated fabrics for our upcoming Sewing Camp.
