Teaching Kids to Sew - Project #9 Fabric Apron

Teaching Kids to Sew - Project #9 Fabric Apron

Materials needed for this project:

     2/3 yd of fabric (24")
     3 - 2 1/2" x 24" strips
    1 -  8" x 14" rectangle
     1 - 5" square
     Single Fold Bias Tape

Fold length of fabric up 11". Cut the fabric across.

On one end, measure up 5" from fold and mark. Measure across top edge 11" and mark. Set ruler on both markings and cut across.

With remaining fabric (or optional second color), cut 3 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 24", pocket measuring 8" x 14", and 5" square.

On bias edges, sew bias tape to the right side of the fabric. Fold over to the backside, stitch in place and top stitch the edge.

Sew strips in half lengthwise - on 2 of those strips, sew one end as well. Turn.

Iron strips. Top stitch both sides.

Zigzag the top edge of the apron. Zigzag the sides and bottom edges of the apron.

Turn top edge down 1/4" and zigzag again. Do the same with the sides and bottom edge as well.

Large pocket - zigzag or serge all 4 edges. Iron 1/4" down on all 4 sides. Zigzag the top edge down. Iron top edge down another 3/4". Sew down the top edge. Top stitch as well.

Center the Large Pocket at the bottom of the apron. For this sample, I measured 2 1/2" up from the bottom.

Measure the middle of the pocket. Draw a line down the center with a pencil. Sew down the center of the pocket.

Take 5" square and fold it in half. Measure from the fold and up 2". Trim off bottom corners. Zigzag around all sides. Turn down the top edge 1/4" and top stitch.

Iron edges of top pocket in 1/4". Position on apron, centered. Sew in place.

To add straps to the sides, zigzag to the top of the side. Fold it in and top stitch twice to match the bias edge. Fold over the strap as you top stitch and sew it into place as you go.

Iron the bottom hem 3/4". Sew the seam and top stitch.

Iron the top down 3/4". Before sewing the seam, tuck the end of the neck strap in and sew in place. Reinforce the neck strap by sewing a rectangle to make it strong. Repeat on the other side.

And there it is complete!

Happy day!
